The man behind the publicity.
Charles
Kauluwehi Maxwell, Sr. A man seriously troubled by his childhood upbringing.
"I was taught when young that it is not right to be naked."
"Number two. It's very insulting. As a native Hawaiian, our culture dictates that to be nude in front of somebody else who is not your family is an insult. A cultural insult to be naked."
"At night they have orgies. They have, they burn fire. They run around.
They do new age rituals there. There are drugs there."
Maui
Releasing the Sun - affronts tourist and locals alike
at the Maui Airport Terminal
"Shige Yamada was born in Waluku, Maui in 1933. In this work of art
depicting a moment of triumph, the stylized figure represents man while
the sun symbolizes life and knowledge. The demigod Maui captures the sun
at the summit of Haleakala. After receiving a promise from the sun to traverse
the sky more slowly for the benefit of mankind, Maui releases his captive.
This Polynesian myth may be interpreted as an attempt by man to exercise
mastery over his destiny. Maui Releasing the Sun, 1992. Cast Bronze" (inscription
on plaque)
Little Beach was also featured on the Maui Community College news. A
transcript of that presentation can be found at this link: http://www.onmaui.org/JanLitlBch.html
CONTACT THE HAWAII TOURISM AUTHORITY (HTA) for more information on nude beaches in Hawaii. Figures based on HTA information demonstrated that the closure of a popular nude beach on the Big Island cost the state sixty million annually. It is believed that Little Beach on Maui contributes in excess of a hundred million a year to the local economy.
