Lifeguards not Lunch Wagons!

Lunch Wagon Placement Interfering with Emergency Personnel

Tourist savor their shave ice unaware that their car and others queuing for service at the lunch wagon are interfering with the entry and egress of paramedics and other personnel responding to another incident at Makena State Park. The ambulance approaches from the beach bearing today's victim of Maui's most dangerous beach.

It is almost a daily routine. Paramedics are called to deal with the various injuries incurred at Makena State Park. Part of the gamet for the crews is the gathering of tourist and others wanting a shave ice or other treat from the Jaws lunch Wagon.

The Lingle administration successfully blocked the legislature's intent to have life guards by July of 2005. As if to add insult to injury State Park Officials found and placed within the park an unneeded and unwanted vendor.

In early October state park officials granted concessionaire rights to the Jaws lunch wagon and placed it in front of the main pedestrian access and in the fire lane utilized by the numerous emergency vehicles that respond to incidents at Big Beach.

Firemen clean equipment in middle of traffic lane precluded from fire lane by Jaws Vendor wagon placed there by park officials.

The Jaw's vendor wagon not only has significantly impacted the limited parking at Big Beach, slowing the turnover rate as patrons linger for a snack but it is also impacting the vendors outside the park that have served the Maui visitor for years. Five vendors located adjacent to the park provide a variety of snacks without impacting the park in any way. Likely this number will diminish as patrons are lost and profit margins dwindle.
