Dear Governor Lingle:

What is going on at Makena State Park?  I noted today that park signs indicate the park is
open from 5 AM to 6 PM. Just the other day and for as long as I can remember the park hours
were from 5 AM to 9 PM. I work closely with the Department of Land and Natural Resources to
provide a safe environment for the park visitor. As you know I have been actively seeking to get
life guards on the beach for the last two years. Those efforts have been effectively thwarted by
State Park officials.

Closing the park at 6 PM will end the Sunday drum circle at Little Beach which has been
a tradition for some twenty years that I am personally aware. Weddings often planned around
sunset will be verboten. What of the countless visitors that want to take in an ocean sunset? I am
just astounded that such a move has been made without any consultation with the park visitor be
they tourist or Maui resident.

This matter needs your immediate attention. I expect you will be hearing from other
perplexed park users.

Sincerely,

George R. Harker
