Updates August 2007, Portable Toilets of Makena State Park

By Dr. George R. Harker

Portable toilets previously on the beach at Makena State Park were removed Wednesday August 8, 2007.  A handicapped toilet and four portables in better condition than those at beach side were brought in and placed adjacent to the parking lot.

A rather remarkable achievement if you think about! It has been over six years since the handicapped toilet burned. Apparently they are in short supply and this one had to be carefully handcrafted to meet the very stringent requirements of the ADA. Well, all right maybe it is just incompetence at the local level. You decide.

Some tips on the toilet facilities of Makena State Park. They are usually cleaned on the mornings of Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Loading of course is greatest on the weekends. If you want paper best bring your own by Saturday particularly at the Big Beach One entrance which gets the heaviest usage.

There are no handicapped toilet facilities in the park. The last handicapped toilet was burned with the others in April of 2001.

Shown above is the facility at Big Beach Three entrance.

The four toilets at Big Beach One entrance. One feature of the Jaws lunch wagon concession documents was their responsibility for keeping the toilets clean in the park and keeping the paper filled. Indeed there is more attention given toilet maintenance than the food requirements of the concession.

If you do not yell and scream when your toilet is tipped over with you inside you effectively take all the fun out of it for the instigator and his/her friends.

Some portables have a view of the ocean. While others offer a view of the individual next door. This problem may have been resolved by increased spacing between units and with the duct tape over the hole as seen below. I have noticed that the duct tape does not stay in place long! Interestingly a voyeur was caught some months ago. Since the complainant choose not to file a complaint he was not charged or held. He is an up country man and is just one of many that enjoy their own version of moon watching.

The last handicapped toilet was burned with the regular portables before April 22, 2001. The photograph shows the replacements for the standard portables. To my knowledge no effort has been made to replace the handicapped equipped unit.
