For those students of nude recreation the newly published book by Gordon
Gill entitled Recreational Nudity and the Law is well worth
looking at. The book contains 101 abstracts of cases dealing with nudity
in a recreational context. Reviewing the cases presented one can develop
an overview of just what has happened and is happening in the evolution
of nude recreation within the legal community. The case law that lead to
our present standards regarding nudity in our society becomes most evident.

Being an authority on nude beaches is not without it's perils. You probably
saw Dr. George R. Harker on TV in 1991 talking about losing his job as
a university professor because he studied nude beaches and had been an
expert witness in a number of significant cases. Published in 1993 his
book He Wouldn't Drink the Hemlock: The Firing of Dr. Leisure
is a classic. In it he reveals how those in power can bend the rules to
discharge a person they don't like. It is apparent to the reader that if
it can happen to Dr. Harker it can happen to any of us. The book also gives
insight into the politics of nude beaches with particular emphasis on Little
Beach, Maui, Hawaii. Dr. Harker was also a key player in the Rochester,
New York case and his involvement is explained. A must read for the nude
beach enthusiast, the recreation student or professional interested in

Dr. Harker wrote the book Creation and Management Guide to Public
Clothing Optional Beaches and Parks in 1990 for the American Sunbathing
Association. It has been distributed worldwide to those in the recreation
profession.
Rooster Rock State park in Oregon (near Portland) was one of the first
state parks to officially acknowledge nude use. In the process they developed
a sign which they used to advise park users of the use. It reads ATTENTION
BEYOND THIS POINT YOU MAY ENCOUNTER NUDE SUNBATHERS. That sign or slight
variations have been used by the National Park Service and other agencies
to designate the boundary of clothing optional areas.
