Dr. Leisure's Top Ten Nude Beaches

(clothing optional) for 2006  (North America)

  1. Little Beach, Maui, Hawaii [Directions] The fact of the matter is that Little Beach will always be Dr. Leisure's personal choice as the number one clothing optional beach in the world. You just cannot beat the ambiance of Little Beach. Nice sand. Human scale. Year round weather. The reasons are numerous. Ultimately it is the people from around the world that come here to pay omage to the demigod Maui who captured the sun. Maui forced the sun to pass overhead slower so that humankind could enjoy the benefits. Hawaiian legend has it that Maui was born on Little Beach.
  2. Haulover Beach, City of Miami Beach, Florida [Directions] Under the jurisdiction of the Dade Country Recreation Department this has to be the number one clothing optional beach on the mainland (Hawaiian way of referring to continental states.)  Ease of access (parking lot across the street), proximity to accommodations, presence of lifeguards all contribute to making this the number one clothing optional beach in the USA.
  3. Mazo Beach (on Wisconsin River),[Directions] in the Mazomanie State Wildlife Refuge, Wisconsin.
  4. Wreck Beach, Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada [Directions] Another sanctioned clothing optional beach under the auspices of Greater Vancouver Regional Authority. An incredible beach to experience. The main shortcoming is the short season related to its geographic position.
  5. Rooster Rock State Park, Portland, Oregon [Directions] Probably the first state park to formally acknowledge and accommodate the nude user. To Dr. Leisure's knowledge they are the source of the sign language now associated with clothing optional beaches around the country. "Attention, beyond this point you may encounter nude sunbathers"  ( Dr. Leisure's business card is this slogan on a refrigerator magnet and can be obtained by sending a $1 and a self addressed envelop to  Box 1137, Kihei, HI 96753.)
  6. Sandy Hook, Gateway National Recreation Area, New Jersey [Directions] Part of a National Recreation Area administered by the National Park Service this facility operates in sharp contrast to the what is happening in Hawaii at Kaloko-Honokohau Beach also administered by the National Park Service.
  7. San Onofre State Beach, above San Diego, California [Directions]
  8. Red, White and Blue Beach, California [Directions]
  9. Sauvie Island, Oregon  [Directions] (north end managed by Dept. of Fish and Wildlife)

    Hippie Hollow (Austin, Texas) used to be high on the list. Given the current hassle by county officials making it a crime to be nude with your children Dr. Leisure can not recommend this site for the time being.

    SOME OBSERVATIONS REGARDING "CLOSED" NUDE BEACHES BY DR. LEISURE

    Over the years Dr. Leisure has studied a lot of nude beaches. The legal status of nude use seems to change from place to place and from time to time. Clearly the trend is for acceptance of this rather fundamental human condition, i.e. to be natural in our natural world.

    Nevertheless, it is still possible to encounter the beach traditionally used for nude use that is considered closed by law to that use. What I have found is that a local contingent usually continues the practice of nude use regardless of potential legal consequences. And in general the number of arrest (if any) is very few.

    What Dr. Leisure is saying is that nude use continues on the nude beaches which he has indicated are closed above. Use of these facilities is at your own risk. However, for the more adventurist nudist or naturist there is something exhilerating to the idea that the uniformed park ranger moving down the beach is not there to help interpret the beach but rather to arrest you for breaking the law if he or she has a mind to. So be cautious and aware. Be courteous and comply with any request from a park official. Be prepared to come up with the $100 or so that might be required for bail or fine.

    If you don't have the stomach for this sort of adventure then by all means stay with the acknowledged and accepted clothing optional beaches. Put your money into the local economy while at the same time benefiting from feeding your face or the comforts of a nice resort.

    On the other hand, if you enjoy controversy and a little excitement....   Go for it! There are countless potential nude beaches waiting to be liberated!

    California's Nude Beaches

    If you are interested in nude beaches in California the best source is the San Francisco Bay Guardian. Every June they publish the most complete listing that Dr. Leisure is aware. They also publish this on the internet at www.sfbg.com/nude02/. Check them out.

    The guide to Nude Beaches '02was prepared by Gary Hanauer. Gary's guide, probably more than any other publication, clearly documents the growing popularity of nude recreation.
     

    GAY MAN LOOKING FOR NUDE RECREATION?   Dr. Leisure has just become aware of the book Naked Places,  Guide for Gay Men to Nude Recreation and Travel by Michael Boyd.
